Berninger labored with Booker T. Jones on Serpentine Jail and initially went into the undertaking hoping to make a covers album earlier than sharing “orphan songs” with the famed producer.
“It didn’t begin out as a solo factor. It began out as, I wished to do a bunch of covers simply to discover ways to sing higher, and I wished to work with [producer] Booker T. Jones,” Berninger disclosed to SPIN forward of the album’s launch. “He labored with Willie Nelson to make Stardust, and that’s an excellent covers file. However then I had all these orphan songs, and I didn’t wish to begin one other band, so I began sharing these originals with Booker. After I’m writing, I’m not writing like, ‘It will likely be for this.’ I’m at all times writing about myself.”
